LOCATION: New York, NY

CLIENT: MoMA PS1

SIZE: 5,000 sq ft

SCOPE: Ongoing

STATUS: Coming Summer 2012!

TEAM: Matthias Hollwich, Marc Kushner, Robert May, Adam Hostetler, Matthew Hoffman, Tim Aarsen, David Lee, Ryan Donaghy, Clare Reidy, Dwight Engel, Dongil Kim, Jamie Abrego, Eunsun Park, Brett Wiemann, Andreas Kostopoulos, Andreas Tjeldflaat, Evan Litvin, Gregory Knobloch
Warm-up to Wendy!

Wendy does not play the typical architecture game of ecological apology - instead she is pro-active. That is why Wendy is composed of nylon fabric treated with a ground breaking titania nanoparticle spray to neutralize airborne pollutants. During the summer of 2012 Wendy will clean the air to an equivalent of taking 260 cars off the road. The courtyard at MoMA PS1 will be activated by tools like shade, wind, rain, music, and visual identity to reach beyond her envelope. Wendy's spiky arms reach out with micro-programs like blasts of cool air, music, water canons and mists to create social zones throughout the courtyard.

Come visit Wendy in the courtyard of MoMA Ps1 this summer!

Our design is inspired by the fresh and innovative thinking of the Element brand.

The facade expresses all architectural elements (windows and VTAC units), in a playful fashion, and is fueled by clues from nature, documenting and intensifying the shadow of the sun as an overall design statement. The facade generates a unique and welcoming presence within its urban context and presents the modem, and ecological responsible vision of the Element hotel brand to the world.

The facade is not just the building enclosure, it is the face of the building, and part of the identity of the people who stay at the hotel for an extended time. d

TAGS: Branded, Build, Small, Branding, The STARZ HAPPY HOUR LOUNGE takes lounging to the next level. Stripes of carpet peel off of the ground to become seats, chairs, tables and divans. An empty commercial space is transformed into a relaxation landscape where people can enjoy themselves, lean back and look up at ceiling mounted televisions airing STARZ Channel original programming. The banded carpet landscape climbs up the wall and terminates at a main projection screen. Access to the space encourages anticipation via an escalator journey to the 3rd floor along which visitors learn about STARZ programming, inhabiting a decompression space that leaves the hustle of the street far behind.

New Aging

Matthias HollwichWe have to start a revolution! The way we age in America is inhumane and inadequate. We might live a good life after retirement, but the last three years are hell. There are 17,000 nursing homes in America, and 17,000 reasons to not move into any of them. The dignity of aging needs to be reinstated and we cannot do that by chasing eternal youth.

New Aging explores a new way for society to deal with aging, by outlining how we can pioneer our own future selves, and how architecture and urbanism can be re-engineered to support new living typologies, service proximities, and social relevance and space. Become part of the New Aging revolution and join the conversation!</description>

TAGS: Interior Design, Build, Small, Retail, Branding, Branded, A shopping retreat that is both on brand and progressively styled. Designed for the Continental Chase card members during their holiday shopping excursions at three malls around the country, the challenge is to design something comfortable without losing the brand's message.

Simple materials are deployed in unexpected ways to create a unified and branded experience without overt references to logos or signage. Corners are treated with a radius to suggest the curve of the Chase Continental Card, and to break with the mall's typical retail environment.

SCOPE: Competition Entry

STATUS: Complete 2011

TEAM: Matthias Hollwich, Robert May, Andreas Kostopoulos, Tim Aarsen, Adam Hostetler, Mariline Laenen, Tia Crocker, Matthew Hoffman

TAGS: Cultural ”ARTSCAPE,” continues the exploration of the firm’s signature ECONIC design approach, creating ecological icons around the globe.

HWKN used the opportunity with their submission for the International Competition for the New Taipei City Museum of Art to continue the exploration of ECONIC design ideas. ECONIC (Ecological + Icon) is the belief that architectural forms can excite people about a sustainable lifestyle by bringing nature back into their lives through new architectural arrangements. Artscape is defined by a giant artificial landscape, sliced and subdivided by a series of chasms, which draws users deep into the museum itself and produces a series of surprising moments throughout the museum. Artscape is hybrid of an urban environment, a landscape, and a building. This combination lets people flow freely between a variety of exhibitions and environments, making art accessible to all.

SIZE: 64 sq ft each

SCOPE: Schematic Design through to Construction Administration

STATUS: Complete 2011

TEAM: Matthias Hollwich, Robert May, Adam Hostetler, Matthew Hoffman, Tim Aarsen, Mariline Laenen, Alana Goldweit

TAGS: Branding The 6 “UNIQLO CUBES,” have arrived in New York City, now at the Highline Rink. The cubes celebrate UNIQLO’s innovative yet classic apparel in smart jewel-like architectural packages.

HWKN’s designed cubes illuminate and enlighten neighborhoods with an in-depth look into UNIQLO’s unique product quality. The pop-up stores showcase UNIQLO by forming simple volumes with high-tech surfaces cladding their gridded surface.

Once the cube is plopped into location, a section of the form slides open like a vault, inviting people to come visit, try on clothes, and purchase the treasures that lay inside. At night all cubes glow in the dark and mark their presence. UNIQLO’s brand presence emerges from the powerful simplicity of the form, to the glowing facades, all the way down to the details; unfolding the highest material and manufacturing quality.
