OPEN THEATER

LOCATION: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

CLIENT: Ngo Novo Horizonte

SIZE: 10,000 sq ft

STATUS: Proposal

TEAM: Matthias Hollwich, Marc Kushner, Robert May

TAGS: CultureThe Open Theater is conceived in cooperation with the Ngo Novo Horizonte and Dietmar Starke as a way to bring social and cultural services to the under-served population of an urban Favela. The organic form of Open Theater is cradled in a lush valley in close proximity to a school and at the head of a new public pathway that will weave through the center of the Favela below it. The Open Theater will host theater performances, movie screenings, community meetings, children play areas, and many other activities so that it becomes a new cultural center for the community. The Open Theater invites people from Rio and beyond to visit the favela and participate in local culture. The global trend towards authentic experiences gives the development a contemporary dimension and a realistic, inspiring backbone for new social and economic development within an ecological context.

Breaking News: MAX represents a new way to live in the city. The building is a community incubator, packed with public spaces to work, hang out and network. The 56 apartments are small, 250 square feet each, but utility doesn’t mean compromise. These efficient machines for living are arranged around a vertical public core, topped by a “hat” of communal rooftop amenity space, giving Max its unique disposition. Max wants you to make friends, have a drink, socialize, and expand beyond your four walls.

MAX is designed to be a community asset. It is careful not to turn its back to its surrounding neighbors, but to instead turn a warm eye to the public space around it. Maximized glazing makes it inviting, and its green hat makes it a beacon of curiosity and potential about a new way to live in the city.

Max’s massing is made up of three major pieces. A basement lobby connects to a ground floor open retail level with 15’-0” ceiling heights. Above that is an elegant 9-story residential component clad in black brick with aluminum window mullions. The assemblage is topped with a planted hat that screens mechanical space and houses community amenities.

Breaking News: Wendy is Back!

The Sheikha Salama Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation and Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, announce the international installation of Wendy Abroad, the HWKN (Hollwich Kushner)-designed air-purifying structure, during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Wendy made her first appearance in New York City as the winner of the 2012 MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program when she was previously on display during the summer Warm-Up concert series. Wendy Abroad kicks off during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, January 13- January 17, 2013. The Wendy Abroad installation, re-envisioned in the context of a new site by the Foundation and powered by Masdar via solar energy for the first time, will be open to the public through February 6.

Come visit Wendy in the Al Sahil Maydan Plaza of the Corniche in Abu Dhabi!

TAGS: Interior, BrandingThe new MenScience Flagship store creates a gridded oasis of blackened steel product display for the MenScience brand, juxtaposed by an immersive surrounding of locally-sourced, recycled wood plank.

The MenScience brand carries a line of advanced skincare and nutritional products specifically geared towards men, and the design of its first physical retail location in New York City demanded a precise combination of product-centered functionality and branded aesthetic impact. Masculine and ultra-adaptable, the new store features a hallway of products from between the two storefronts of the space.

Materiality, modular regularity, and clean detailing emphasize sophistication and refinement without detracting from the brand’s masculine identity, all while facilitating the display and delivery of products and information with infinite configuration opportunities.

Hard on the heels of a devastating fire in November 2011, Fire Island Pines has unveiled dramatic and far-reaching plans for the rebuilding of the legendary Pavilion dance club.

The building’s form is sheared towards the harbor to visually welcome the over 800,000 visitors who arrive via ferry to Fire Island every summer. Two stories of outdoor terrace make it a perfect place for an afternoon drink. The design creates a 3-dimensional experience that virtually stretches the public zone of the boardwalk up into the building’s façade. Benches, wide staircases, and storefronts activate the base of the Pavilion and the entrance forms a set of bleachers that act as a viewing platform, stage, wedding chapel and extended dance floor. A new welcome bar on the 1st floor, the high-tea terrace and the pavilion club are all connected by an internal loop of stairs.
