TEDx East

Meet Wendy

Matthias Hollwich

Presentation Date: May 11, 2012

Website: TEDx East
Meet Wendy - and hear how she was conceived. Matthias of HWKN is presenting an intimate and detailed view "behind the curtain" of the creative process that shaped Wendy. From an extensive and meticulous design process to the brink of total failure - Wendy is the perfect example of how strategic and scary design has to be.

New Aging

Matthias HollwichWe have to start a revolution! The way we age in America is inhumane and inadequate. We might live a good life after retirement, but the last three years are hell. There are 17,000 nursing homes in America, and 17,000 reasons to not move into any of them. The dignity of aging needs to be reinstated and we cannot do that by chasing eternal youth.

New Aging explores a new way for society to deal with aging, by outlining how we can pioneer our own future selves, and how architecture and urbanism can be re-engineered to support new living typologies, service proximities, and social relevance and space. Become part of the New Aging revolution and join the conversation!</description>

<description>HWKN has curated an amazing team of designers to create merchandise that reflects Wendy's progressive aesthetics and ground-breaking technology. Each design by 2x4, Pentagram and Bruce Mau Design is coated in Titania Nanoparticles to clean the air as you wear it. All profits from the sale go toward helping build Wendy this summer.

Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

&#60;img src="http://payload51.cargocollective.com/1/2/77701/3326347/4.jpg" border="0" width="300" height="400" width_o="300" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload51.cargocollective.com/1/2/77701/3326347/4_o.jpg" align="left" data-mid="17078496" /&#62; Wendy Tote designed by 2x4
Wendy is an icon - and in this tote she winks back at you.

Note: All totes are treated with titania nanoparticles - just like Wendy! This means your bag will scrub the air of harmful particulates and pollution.

To highlight Wendy's dimensionality and form, BMD mapped her name onto the surface, playing off her unexpected shapes. The relationship between the geometric lines and distorted type makes you pause and ponder her. Wendy is a double-take.

The image is a graphic novel -- a mystery. We are inspired by the ambiguous nature of Wendy's silhouette and that it's reminiscent of a talking bubble. It takes on a dual reading in the story: it can be read as an object, the protagonist, but it can also be read as speech bubbles by an unknown entity.

Get the bird's eye view of Long Island City in this tote that shows Wendy in all her glory, chilling at her home in the courtyard.

Wendy is many things at once, this design takes Wendy's many constituent elements and spells it out graphically - from the wind she emits, to the sky she scrubs, the water she rockets out or the music she'll be host to - this T has it all written down.

The aim of the design is to emphasize the inherent contrast within Wendy. A simple graphic highlights Wendy's exterior grid and spiky interior form, as a result the architecture stands out.

This design takes the single cell of a graphic novel and explodes it - the Wendy silhouette expands beyond its pointy physical limitations, sending out good vibrations and music for all. The perfect accompaniment to a Warm Up.

Architecture breathes for the first time.

The gentle up and down of the roof cools the space inside without additional technological infrastructure while an articulated façade further emphasizes the movement. Interactive presentation kiosks glow in the dark and invite intrepid visitors to further explore.

The tallest planned development in New Jersey, it will be a city within a city - J2 is designed to revitalize an urban void by leveraging connections to transportation and existing population centers.

Journal Squared is a new mixed-use high-rise development awarded through a design competition to HWKN and Handel Architects. The three tower project – the tallest at 82 stories - includes over 2,000 apartments, as well as office space and retail. A sweeping, tree-filled plaza will host farmer’s markets, evening film projections and public events along its low stairs that slope down to the PATH station.

This project, a gut renovation of a sprawling apartment in the West Village, was to create defined spaces within an unruly floor plan.

The other requirement by the client was the complete disguise of household mess. The solution is rationally shaped rooms, squares and rectangles, that create a storage pouches around their perimeter. The central square, a blue foyer, is the knuckle that unites private and public zones.

SIZE: 10,000 sq ft

SCOPE: Concept Engineering &#38; Schematic Design

STATUS: Ongoing

TEAM: Matthias Hollwich, Marc Kushner, Robert May

TAGS: CultureThe Open Theater is conceived in cooperation with the Ngo Novo Horizonte and Dietmar Starke as a way to bring social and cultural services to the under-served population of an urban Favela. The organic form of Open Theater is cradled in a lush valley in close proximity to a school and at the head of a new public pathway that will weave through the center of the Favela below it. The Open Theater will host theater performances, movie screenings, community meetings, children play areas, and many other activities so that it becomes a new cultural center for the community. The Open Theater invites people from Rio and beyond to visit the favela and participate in local culture. The global trend towards authentic experiences gives the development a contemporary dimension and a realistic, inspiring backbone for new social and economic development within an ecological context.

TAGS: CultureEver since the first air-conditioning system was installed in 1902, our interior world became independent from the world outside. Although this is sometimes called ‘efficient’, sealed buildings completely disassociate us from the natural world, leading to greater energy consumption and pollution, a key component of the global environmental crisis. In order to save us from the imminent ecological catastrophe, strategies of energy efficiency and sustainability must move beyond conservation: we need buildings that harvest the environment for energy, synergizing the building’s performance with natural forces.

Local materials drive the design for this small addition to a residential compound in Upstate New York. The client’s home abuts a repository of felled trees. Although originally intended for fire wood, these trunks are repurposed and stacked to create an enclosure for the client’s car. The simple stacking of elements creates as surprising aggregation of material that is located in a forest setting – a great place to park.

TAGS: CultureThe close proximity to the Mehmed-Pasha Sokolovic Bridge is the catalyst that defines this design for the Hidroelektrane na Arini a.d. Visegrad (HE NA DRINI) Office Building. The entire proposal celebrates this important world heritage site, while engaging with the public and creating an efficient workplace.

The building learns from its surroundings: its size, massing and regard to the street, are contextual, but its center is hollow. The central void is on axis with the Bridge to create a dynamic response to its presence. The majestic Bridge should not terminate in the flat façade of an office building, instead its path continues through the building to link pedestrians to the Narrow-Guage Rail and the city beyond. The center of the building turns into a public amphitheater that places the Bridge at center stage.
